Bicycle transformation continues

I tried to strip the paint off by burning it off, but that was going to take a million years. So i had to switch to the rather lethal nitro mors. But its finally ready for priming. The image of the mint green frame is the colour that I will eventually paint it. I am (at my father's plea) going to keep the forks chrome though.

Bicycle transformation

I have started taking apart this bike, I plan to paint it and make it as new as I can again; before cycling to Paris. I will try to do regular updates of the various stages.

Kaleidocycle

These images are from four original lino prints on the theme of travel and navigation. The kaleidocycle is folded from a single sheet of paper.

Mutoscope is finished (and works!)

Box with off and reel inside. By the time I filmed this, the mutoscope had experienced quite a lot of revolutions. It's holding together, but there is a sense of it being very fragile when it's in use.

And a little closer up...

Making the mutocope reel

All 400-odd frames of the animation printed and bound into a snaking strip, then attached to a pipe cyclinder. I built a box to house it, and also a couple of cogs to gear-down the turning action. It's almost done! Just needs a pacer to make the pages 'flick', a lid and a lick of paint.

Here are some tiny little hands from another project I've been working on.

Little hands for little ghosts!

More models

Body for clay head from the previous post to sit on:

Dusty old sideshow tent:

Stills from the animation - I might put up a link to the video if I can.

Mutoscope and models

I've been model-making for a short animation animation to be made into a mutocope. I experimented with making heads with posable features before hitting on the idea of using projection. In this way, I could film all the movement and expressions beforehand using a real actor, and then project the images frame-by-frame while filming the stop-motion. I'm sure it must have been done before, but it was a huge learning curve for me and looks much more sophisticated than the other techniques I had tried. It reminds me of pixellation animation such as Angry Kid and Tom Thumb.

Face-paint to help define features more strongly.

Contact sheet on the OHP.

The head is made from clay and has a nose, ears and depressions around the eye areas, but otherwise it is blank.

Secret Pen Pal

Even after the internet was created, people didn't stop writing letters. Do you know why? It is because letters are just great. When they are not bank statements or junk mail, they are like little presents delivered to your door. A great little pick me up to set the tone for the rest of the day.
If you are looking to procure letter writing communications with a stranger, look no further. Just e mail secretpenpal@live.co.uk and all will be revealed.
Get involved.

After a couple of  frantic days I finally managed to pull some stuff together for the Trinity Art fair.  It went swimmingly enough, though I'm pretty sure that no-one could make a good living crafting!  I shared a table with Jay, and all together it looked swede.  Here's some pictures of my wares...
